Poor People United began with a cry from the homeless community. A group of homeless men were being harassed and were asked to leave a parking garage and other areas where they were sleeping. Through that frustration, they decided to organize and Poor People United was founded. PPU began to organize through St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality and has begun connecting with other organizations.

Along with other supporters, Poor People United is a multi-racial organization of, by, and for poor and homeless people in Rochester, NY. We are trying to meet the needs of the poor in our community whose needs have not been met; the homeless, the sanctioned, those who have no assistance at all.

PPU Mission Statement:

• Organize to oppose agencies/policies that cause harm to poor people
• Organize to bring direct assistance to those who are not being served
• Organize our communities to meet their own needs
• Continue to seek solutions to poverty
